Nomads of the Sea
Nómades del Mar is the second work of the Cuatro Vientos Theater Collective that seeks to spread, share and value the Kawésqar culture as part of the intangible heritage of our nation, promoting respect and recognition of ancestral cultures through theater. A family project is proposed, which constitutes educational material for all ages, a journey through the imagination to the southern regions of our country and to a time before ours, revisiting in this fiction a fragment of the history of Chile.
In this second creation, he continues to develop the object animation technique. A minimalist proposal is proposed, where the characters are represented by puppets. The scenographic elements are based on one of the materials typical of the crafts of the Kawésqar people: basketry, reed weaving that was used mainly for collecting shellfish. Through baskets of different sizes and shapes, the images and spaces in which the story takes place are composed, maintaining the same principle of the previous work "Ali's Journey".
The story takes place at the end of the 19th century. Cafalái and Afcár are father and daughter, a small Kawésqar family group, sea nomads who travel the canals of Western Patagonia in their canoe. But their life changes drastically when Salesian missionaries lure them to Dawson Island. Afcár will want to settle in the mission looking for security and protection for her family, but Cafalái will try by all means to defend her passion for sailing, her daily life full of magic among the channels that saw her born, claiming her Kawésqar identity.
On the route to resolve this family breakdown, they will discover that their environment is changing rapidly due to the arrival of large ships in the area, due to the over-exploitation of marine resources and the evangelization of the peoples of Patagonia. Their ancient culture and traditions could be affected by these alterations.
